The purpose described in this code is because "Heal daemons don't have IO threads ..", so "and as a result they send this getxattr down and eventually crash", why don't Heal daemons have IO threads?

Because heal daemons use their own threads which are per replicate translator. There is no io-threads because it doesn't do any user I/O.
