Installing Visual Studio 2022 extension failed

• GitExtensions version: newest
• GIT version: 2.48.1.windows.1
• OS version: Windows 11 Pro 23H2

Issue description

When installing the extension for Visual Studio 2022 over Studio Manage Extensions or manually via github extension download, it always fails with following error:
3/12/2025 11:33:40 - Failed to map SID S-1-5-21-180950878-907020980-1116613021-1001 when creating Update Configuration task
3/12/2025 11:33:41 - Install Error : System.IO.IOException: Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key.

Steps to reproduce

Install via Visual Studio or download it from github and start installation

Some registry key is volatile in your system. This is not a problem with the product. Reboot and try again.

This is not statisfying answer. I googled it, but why does GitExstensions see this? Why is there no error handling? Why can I install other Extensions without problems (no restart in this state required)?

Restarting Windows does not solve the issue, still the same problem

Use procmon from sysinternals and try again. Track down what registry key is having the issue and walk the path up to find which parent key is volatile.

Workaround maybe:
Delete Extension in your local or global visual Studio (global: Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Professional\Common7\IDE\Extensions), start visual studio, tag to install, close visual studio -> works
