Great font rendering

What did you - especially on Gnome - to get this great font rendering? Can't use GeckoLinux for a reason and I want to apply this on my Manjaro Gnome installation.

Hi there, you can download the .tar.gz from here (Github) for the GeckoLinux Gnome edition to see what changes are applied in /etc/fonts. But you can generally get acceptable results by setting the font style to Ubuntu with RGB subpixel rendering and slight hinting.

Hello, I apologize if this is a dumb question but if I were setting up those config files on a pre-existing OpenSUSE installation would I just have to overwrite the original config files or do I have to tell the system to use them explicitly? I've been struggling with getting nice font rendering on KDE wayland so any tips would be appreciated.

Hi there, the Linux font configuration system works by reading the options from the files in /etc/fonts/conf.d/ . There are additional config files available but not activated in /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ and /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/ . Their names and contents generally describe how they affect font rendering. If a font config file is not already present on your system and you want to apply it then you need to create a link to it with the same numbered name in /etc/fonts/conf.d/ .

I've been struggling with getting nice font rendering on KDE wayland

KDE is always complicated in that sense. You have to differentiate between problems with font rendering and font styles . The thing with openSUSE is that it doesn't allow graphical apps to run with sudo and there several graphical methods to run an app with root permissions. Those methods may or may not pick up your user account's configured font settings, so apps running as root can look wrong because they're simply using the wrong UI font. I've found that it's usually necessary in openSUSE to configure the KDE settings as root as well as for your regular user account, and there is also a .config/fontconfig/fonts.conf file for the user accounts as well. Just download the tar.gz for one of the GeckoLinux Plasma editions and decompress it and enable viewing hidden files and search for font to see where I override the openSUSE defaults in GeckoLinux.

Also which flags do I need to run with fc-cache to make the config files take effect after linking them?

You can use soft links of the full paths starting in /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ .

So copy the files to /etc/fonts/conf.avail and then in that directory, run sudo ln -s Config_File /etc/fonts/conf.d ?

That's one way to do it. Or if you're adding custom rules then you can just create them directly in /etc/fonts/conf.d/

There is no /etc/fonts/conf.avail on my system (Arch Linux/EndeavourOS). Where do I copy them to instead? Isn't /etc/fonts/conf.avail deprecated on Arch?
