Trailing whitespace being removed

Not 100% sure this has anything to do with lazy, but I feel like I've removed all other possible culprits at this point and I'm just confused. In the video below I have a very basic setup of lazy with nothing else (no other plugins are being loaded). On save, the trailing whitespace is automatically removed and I'm not sure why. You can see the bare setup when I open the lazy ui (sorry for the colors, like I said nothing else is loaded). Is this something related to lazy or something being loaded from rtp? This has been driving me crazy so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I should also mention that running nvim with the -u NONE option to use no config doesn't have this issue and works as expected (however this obviously isn't super helpful).

not lazy. There was a post about this on reddit as well. must be an upstream Neovim change related to editorconfig
