compass control not appearing on map - Android

I am using the latest versions of Flutter and the Mapbox-gl package. Maps show up as expected but the compass never shows. I have used these parameters in most of their choices: compassEnabled, compassViewPosition and compassViewMargins. Below is one of my test versions.

I also created a flutter project from the example code in this project. The UI version that should toggle the compass on/off does not work either.
