Over the last several months the @executablebooks/core-team has been working on our first MEP, which is on improving cross-references with Markdown links. If you would like to read more about the MEP, or comment on it you can see the review process here:
If accepted these changes will eventually be incorporated into the myst-spec and exposed in JupyterBook, mystjs, and myst-parser.
