specifying page titles

I've run into a couple problems around specifying page/chapter titles.

1. I want the root page to appear in the sidebar, but have its title in the sidebar be different than the top heading.
2. I want the HTML <title> of a given page to be different from the top heading.

I tried following the MyST instructions, specifying:

parse:
  myst_title_to_header: true

in _config.yml and

---
title: My Title
---

in the Markdown file, and that didn't help in either case. Is there something I'm mis-understanding?

Workaround for 1

• Specify a placeholder page as the root
• Set up a redirect from that placeholder to the desired homepage
• Override the title for the desired homepage in the _toc.yml
• Specify home_page_in_navbar: false in the _config.yml
