Execution order of substitutions and recommended way to refer image folders?

Thank you for a good product.

I was planning to use substitutions to define my figures folder per book chapter/folder as follows:

substitutions:
   image_path: chapter-01/media/images
---

```{figure} {{ image_path }}/my_great_figure.svg

But apparently substitutions are executed only after all the figure directives are already parsed creating error with path {{ image_path }}/my_great_figure.svg ? (would it be smart to create a feature request to express the execution order in documentation?)

What is the recommended way to define/configure figure/image folders?
