For native currency transfers, events are not emitted by default. In a contract's receive() method, you may emit an event however that's not very reliable as a selfdestruct operation on another contract could send ETH without running code on the receiver.

Hence in order to get a list of native currency transfers, you'd have to go block by block. I think Etherscan does that and stores it in an indexed database which is available through their APIs.

I think he is talking about native currency, not erc20.
