signing transactions is unsupported with metamask on my end. Is there any solution available with ethers.js?

This is by design, by MetaMask. It is generally not safe for a client to let you sign transactions, and causes issues with their ability to properly assign nonces to that and any future transaction.

Only a handful of clients support it, such as Geth. I do not know of any UI wallet that allows it.
