How to backport changes to Gala?

So #2098 was really great, it would solve a very common annoyance. But to use this on my elementary OS 7.1 Horus I would need to backport it.

Can I just checkout the horus branch, see I can apply the same change there and compile?

This all went without issues.
Noticed the logs when I added them in the code. But no cursor so far.
Might need to reboot. Reboot doesn't help
