No hover effect, footnote issues

Hi, thanks for creating this plugin. However it does not work completelly for me. I also find the documentation not really complete. I was able to add manually citations and put them in the post however what I don´t understand is the behavior with footnotes.

Footnote is just footnote, a line at the bottom and there I want all my used citations to appear in ordered fashion. However when adding footnote I always need to provide label (?) - if I don´t provide it creates some asterisk and also puts this asterisk character next to the number of citation used in the text, not sure why. The hover effect does not work. Perhaps I just don´t understand it.

I assume following case for me:

1. I use only manual citations - so I add few of them using the plugin functionality.
2. I write some text and need to add citation, I position the caret - and insert the citation without any footnote. It gets inserted but no hover effect works, nothing happens when hovering or clicking the small citation number (1 in this case),

Another case with footnote:

2. I want footnote so I create one and since I need to provide a label I put "References".
3. It creates * asterisk character under the footnote line with the label "References" - ok, but I don´t want to the asterisk character there.
4. When adding citations they get added with the correct number and end in the footnote section - OK.
5. When saving work and viewing in Wordpress site the footnote line is gone - nothing visible. Further the hover effect on the citation numbers in the text does not work - only when pointing cursor at the asterisk it works and shows "References".
