I suspect you use more base R than I do, but have you used the {fs} package? I think the fs::dir_create() function has some of this behavior built in. https://fs.r-lib.org/reference/create.html

yes! {fs} is super for so many of the things I do daily. But I do have to deal with dependency issues on our offline server, and as such, I tend to create some utility functions for myself relying solely on base-R, just to make sure other executers of my scripts dont have issues. Also, since the server is offline I also know exactly what operating system my users are using, so I dont need to deal with file system issues, which {fs} so geniously just fixes.
