is there a way for a component in an RCL to detect which environment it's running on (WASM or server)?

try this:

@inject IJSRuntime JSRuntime

@code {
    private bool isWasm;

    protected override void OnInitialized()
    {
        isWasm = JSRuntime is IJSInProcessRuntime;
    }
}

IJSInProcessRuntime is only available in WebAssembly.
