The Natural Language and Information Processing ([http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/NL/index.html NLIP]) group within [http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk Cambridge University Computer Laboratory] conducts research over a wide spectrum of currently active NLP research. In the area of Constraint-Based Processing we are working on the development of the LKB system (LkbTop) and the LinGO English Resource Grammar, underspecified compositional semantics, representation issues (defaults, lexical rules, multilinguality) and lexical acquisition. In the past we have been involved with [http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/NL/anlt.html Alvey Natural Language Tools]. Other areas of research include Information Retrieval, Robust Parsing Technology ([http://www.cogs.susx.ac.uk/lab/nlp/rasp RASP]), Text Summarization, Rhetorically Motivated Search and Navigation, Flexible and Robust Text Generation and Regeneration, Language Acquisition and Evolution, System Evaluation and Text Mining and Bioinformatics ([http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/users/av308/Project_Index/index.html FlySlip]).
The group collaborates with other groups within the Computer Lab, such as the [http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/SRG/ Systems Research Group] and the [http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/TSG/ Theory and Semantics Group], and within the University with the [http://mi.eng.cam.ac.uk/research/speech/ Speech Research Group], [http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk Engineering], the [http://www.mml.cam.ac.uk/ling/ Department of Linguistics], the [http://www.rceal.cam.ac.uk/ Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics] and with the [http://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/ MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit], partly through the medium of the Cambridge Institute for Language Research. There are active research collaborations with researchers at the universities of [http://www.ed.ac.uk/ Edinburgh], [http://www.stanford.edu/ Stanford], [http://www.sussex.ac.uk/ Sussex] and [http://www.ru.nl/ Nijmegen] (Netherlands) and at [http://www.ntnu.no/ NTNU] (Norway), as well as with industrial research laboratories such as Microsoft Research Ltd (Cambridge), NTT Research Labs (Japan), and CELI (Italy). Edinburgh, Stanford, Sussex and Nijmegen (Netherlands) and at NTNU (Norway), as well as with industrial research laboratories such as Microsoft Research Ltd (Cambridge), NTT Research Labs (Japan), and CELI (Italy).
The group consists of four full-time academics (Ann Copestake, Karen Spärck Jones, Ted Briscoe and Simone Teufel), four research associates and eleven research students.
