Is there a way to set small caps and footnotes?

Using lots of academic text, I was wondering if it would be possible to convert all small caps to bold text, and footnotes to something like [^1]?

I'm not sure, it depends on how standard it is and how the formatting is done. I do a lot of my testing with Wikipedia, and the footnotes there end up with a lot of extra HTML.
If you could provide a few examples, I can have a look and see if I can work out a generic solution...

Well, I guess the footnotes are not very standard in what I was looking at, but the small caps is something like this:
