3D Data vs Vector DB

Not technical but hoping to add an idea if it's helpful...

Disney / Pixar Research Labs have been using Volumetric Databases for many years. My question is wouldn't using a 3D type of rendering technique (outside of animations) hold more metadata possibilities with voxels?
