Hopfully this saves some time for newcomers to linux.

If you're on a "fresh" system and getting an error:
error: x86_64-linux-gnu-gcc: No such file or directory

Try adding development tools:
sudo apt-get install build-essential autoconf libtool pkg-config python3-dev
