Battle Check #1 (2023-01-28)

What's that?

To share the status of the project development I decided to start a series of Battle Checks where I'm going to summarize major tests, including some thoughts and ideas that came across.

Circumstances

• Costume: Sandtrooper
• Event: WOŚP in Łódź, Manufaktura (charity event)
• Date: 2023-01-28
• Hardware
  • Raspberry Pi Zero 2W
  • Xiaomi Redmi PB200LZM (powerbank)
  • UGO UKD-1086 (USB audio card)
  • JBL Go 2
  • some crappy headphones used as a microphone
• Software: manually started Stormtrooper Voice Modulator module through SSH + screen
• Environment: indoors (quite loud, especially near the scene where charity auctions were held)

Observations

• IT WORKS!: confirmed the core concept of the project (voice modulation through Raspberry Pi)
• the combination of mobile hotspot and laptop enabled me to quickly adjust anything in the dressing room (as I was able to control the device through SSH)
• some sox parameters need to be adjustable to satisfy different hardware setups
• concurrent access to the sound device is not possible without additional configuration so click sounds didn't work
• a good microphone is mandatory as with the one from crappy headphones I wasn't able to increase the volume of the speaker (too sensitive microphone resulting in a feedback loop)
• loud environments would most probably require push-to-talk functionality or voice detection level configuration option

Summary

I'm happy with the results as I achieved what I was aiming for - plenty of ideas on what to improve.
