New or Sub Landscapes

The CDF's DataOps Initative would like to create a DataOps Landscape, it would include various LF projects across many foundations (CNCF, LF AI & Data, CDF, etc.)

It was suggested that it should be similar to the sub-landscape (WASM). It could either be under LF AI and Data or CD Landscape.

Here are my initial questions:

1. How do you manage the creation of a new landscape section? (Specifically: Is it mocked up somewhere else beforehand? Are all the changes done through pull requests or do you give access to some folks to contribute?)
2. How do you know/decide if it should be a sub landscape or it's own independent landscape?
3. What does creating an independent landscape entail?

1. Landscape groups are managed from the landscape settings.yml file (CDF's landscape settings file). Changes to the landscape2-sites repository are done through pull requests, yes. Once you have the name of the new group, you just need to define what categories would be in it, and submit a PR with the changes. The categories names must match exactly the categories in the landscape.yml file. So in the settings file you'd define the new group and the categories that belong to it. Then you can add those categories to the landscape.yml file and add items to it as usual.

2. This will depend on how closely related the new group is to the landscape. Another factor may be how large will the new group be (or can eventually be, with lots of categories and maybe more groups). Or if you have a popular landscape and think it'll be easier for users to explore the new content from it (they may not even know about the other landscape). But sometimes is tricky and it can be a matter of opinion.

3. If the landscape is for a Linux Foundation project, and you'd like us to host it, you'd need to prepare a GitHub repository with the landscape.yml file and the hosted_logos directory with the items logo in it. Once that's ready, we'll set it up on our end and deploy it. You'll be able to maintain it as usual, by introducing changes to the landscape.yml file.

Thank you @serg-cs I shared this with the DataOps folks and it seems like they will make it a Sub-Landscape of the CDF. Let's leave this open in case they have questions.
