Error when trying to connect via pgAdmin

When trying to connect with pgAdmin, connection attempt fails with:

ERROR: INVALID_ARGUMENT: Unknown statement: SET DateStyle=ISO; SET client_min_messages=notice; SELECT set_config('bytea_output','escape',false) FROM pg_settings WHERE name = 'bytea_output'; SET client_encoding='UNICODE'

Unfortunately this is an incompatibility with Spanner itself, as pgadapter does not actually "translate" per se, but sends commands directly to Spanner. The command(s) you posted is part of the extra handshake that some higher level connectors utilize, which unfortunately are not understood by Spanner. That isn't to say that it is a hurdle that cannot be overcome :) For cases like these, all you need to do is supplement the command metadata file with the desired regex that matches this and replaces the result (and then run pgadapter in psql mode). We would gladly accept any contributions to that file (or even a new file for this specific tool only, to keep it cleaner); do keep in mind it is likely that this is not the only command which is sent by the "handshake", so it might require quite a bit of back and forth (I believe the psql equivalent took 5 round trips, and it is quite a bit simpler than pgAdmin).
