When glow is piped to less, all the formatting is dropped

Glow has an internal --pager option, which is using less internally. Why when I manually pipe to less is all the formatting removed?

glow --pager README.md
glow README.md | less -r

Why do the above not produce the same output?

You can force colors with --style=dark|light.
