How to Restrict Certain Values for ComboBox Which Cannot be Fully Controlled?

If we can't have fully controlled inputs, how can we implement behavior to restrict certain characters in an input?

   const numericInput = inputValue.replace(/\D/g, ''); // Remove all non-digit characters
   setInputValue(numericInput); // This doesn't sync instantly
