Adding npm login to batch script

Hello Capawesome Team,

we are currently experiencing some issues regarding the npm login in our batch script that we use for triggering a docker login/build.

When performing the npm login it needs a username and password and we want to automatically fill these with the env variable GITHUB_USERNAME and GITHUB_PASSWORD.

I have tried a few things now but non of the solutions i found were working.

Reading out the values from the .env file is already working but piping it to the login command not.
Is there a way that we can do this?

I'm not familiar with your scripts but with the following command you should be able to write the value of an environment variable to a .npmrc file:

echo "//npm.pkg.github.com/:_authToken=${{ secrets.NPM_TOKEN }}" >> .npmrc

This will then be used for npm login.

EDIT: I recommand using an access token instead of username and password for automation/scripts.

This added @capawesome-team:registry=https://npm.pkg.github.com//npm.pkg.github.com/:_authToken=[ACCESS_TOKEN] to the .npmrc file.

How can i use this now in the batch script?

This depends on your batch script. I am not familiar with your internal processes.
But this is one way how to access the private npm registry for example in CI/CD environment and this should work for your batch script too.

In the batch script we just do a
docker pull ...
docker build ...
docker push ...

and before that we need to do the npm login --scope=@capawesome-team --auth-type=legacy --registry=https://npm.pkg.github.com

which will ask for the username and password. But like sayed previously this should not ask for the login data

Without seeing the scripts I can't help here. :/ But this repository is only meant to answer questions related to the plugin. This is more a general question about docker and npm.
