The .io ccTLD pertains to the British Indian Ocean Territory, which will cease to exist as the UK gives up sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, more than fifty years after this country gained its independence. It is very likely that the domain as a whole will be withdrawn by ICANN. Perhaps it makes sense to move away from this tech fad to something more representative of the project, like .org.
