statamic svg addon and locales

I'm running into some trouble with the svg addon and locales. In short, pages which load svg images with a svg tag like {{ svg src="/assets/example.svg" }} on a locale other than my default locale do not work, I'm getting the "whoops looks like something went wrong" page.
