Encoding issues

I have recently moved to CP from WP and switched to azurecurve SMTP as well. Since, all mails containing German umlauts are not correctly encoded / displayed.

Attached is an email which contains "ä ö ü ß Ä Ö Ü" as the body text that I sent using the "Test Email" function in SMTP.

My CP is set to German (even though the l10n is incomplete as of now), but umlauts should be encoded correctly independently of the UI lang.

The plugin is set to use the charset from the get_bloginfo function. What is the charset set to at the moment?

I tested the characters you listed on a test email from my site and received this on the email:

Hi Ian, I am a rather non-technical person. How can I find out to what the get_bloginfo charset ist set to? When I set the website language to English (US) in the CP settings, the German umlauts are encoded correctly. But when I set back to German, the encoding goes bonkers.

Your charset is showing publicly as UTF-8, which I would expect.

I changed my test site to Deutsch and got the same result as before:

Do you have access to your wp-config file? There are a couple of lines relating to charset in that?

I could also create a debug version of the plugin to report some settings when the email test is sent so we can try to identify what is happening?

sure, I can access my wp-config. It contains

and

 * language must be installed to wp-content/languages. For example, install

Nothing suspicious here as far as I can tell.

Also, different clients seem to have different issues here. For example, Apple Mail on my iPad displays my test messages correctly. The iCloud web app has the correct umlauts in the inbox (preheader display), but only unknown characters in the message body:

My daily email client, eM Client, gets it wrong in both inbox list and message body:

No idea what's going on here.
