Hardware accelerarion

What exactly does hardware acceleration do? Am I losing anything if i leave it disabled? I've had issues with some media's not displaying correctly (like black screens), with it enabled

I would look up VLC's explanation, as that's the backing player and the option simply toggles VLC's setting.
