Crosshairs from axis until marker

Is it possible to limit the crosshair width (for yaxis) and height (for xaxis) to only meet with the marker, and not go across the entire chart?

This is a requirement from the client and I can't see a built-in option to make this work. If not, is there a way to extend/modify the crosshair behavior by myself so that this becomes possible without requesting a feature?
