How to setup couchdb cluster with docker compose.yaml

Hi,

I'm trying to setup couchdb cluster of 2 nodes with compose.yaml file

  node-1:
    container_name: test-node-1
    image: couchdb

    ports:
      - '6001:5984'
    environment:
      - COUCHDB_USER=admin
      - COUCHDB_PASSWORD=password1
      - NODENAME=node-1
      - COUCHDB_SECRET=my_secret_key
      - ERL_FLAGS=-setcookie mycookie
    volumes:
      - ./dbdata1:/opt/couchdb/data

  node-2:
    container_name: test-node-2
    image: couchdb
    restart: always
    ports:
      - '6002:5984'
    environment:
      - COUCHDB_USER=admin
      - COUCHDB_PASSWORD=password2
      - NODENAME=node-2
      - COUCHDB_SECRET=my_secret_key
      - COUCHDB_JOIN=node-1
      - ERL_FLAGS=-setcookie mycookie
    volumes:
      - ./dbdata2:/opt/couchdb/data

and when i run docker compose up -d everything started working except when i check nodes with curl http://admin:password@server_ip:5984/_membership i get the following output:

and also curl http://admin:password@server_ip:5984/_cluster_setup should be {"state":"cluster_finished"} but i got cluster_enabled

What am i missing?

I can't find how can i join these 2 nodes into a cluster from compose.yaml file?

I don't think you can do it automatically from a compose file. I'm not familiar with COUCHDB_JOIN and it doesn't seems to be in https://github.com/apache/couchdb-docker but as I said it's been a while since I did this, so maybe things changed and I'm wrong here.

Manually I believe it should go something like this, but I don't have a machine with running docker handy, so can't really test it, sorry

$ curl -X POST http://127.0.0.1:6001/_cluster_setup -d '{"action": "enable_cluster", "bind_address": "0.0.0.0", "node_count": "2"}'
$ curl -X POST http://127.0.0.1:6001/_cluster_setup -d '{"action": "add_node", "host": "couchdb@node-2", "port": 5894, "username": "admin", "password": "password2"}'
$ curl -X POST http://127.0.0.1:6001/_cluster_setup -d '{"action": "finish_cluster"}'

I just tried this via API but I get the following response when i run
curl http://admin:password1@127.0.0.1:6001/_membership:

{
    "all_nodes":
        ["couchdb@node-1"],
    "cluster_nodes":[
        "couchdb@node-1"
        "couchdb@node-2"
    ]
}

So why couchdb@node-2 is missing in all_nodes section?

Here I tried to run a compose cluster https://gist.github.com/nickva/cf9cac975ceb062b61872f7857a0e104 but I ended up joining the cluster manually in my workload image in def setup_cluster(args):.... I only used it as a demo, not in a production environment.
