swww - changing from animated to still - simple mode causes bleeding

Hello,

I'm using Hyprland 0.49, waypaper 2.6, and swww 0.10.3

I noticed when I was using an animated wallpaper and then switched to a static jpg/png, when using the simple mode, bleeding would then occur from the previous jpg/png wallpapers, some of the image getting dragged into the new wallpaper.

In this screen shot, the entire background is black, with just the logo, name and girl. But here you can see red and dark bluish blotches, this was some of the previous wallpaper that bleed into this one.

It seems that, when using an animated wallpaper, and using the simple mode, afterwards, every static jpg/png image I switched to, bleeding from the previous static jpg/png wallpaper, some of it appeared in the new wallpaper.

I don't see bleeding changing from animated to animated with the simple mode, this is only happening, changing from an animated wallpaper to static ones, all the static ones will then have bleeding from the previous images.

Once I switched to one of the animated modes, this disappeared.

Hello, this sounds like swww issue to me. I mean, waypaper just issues commands, but can't control how the wallpaper engine displays it. To verify it, could you try changing the same wallpapers using just swww through the terminal? Like:

swww img <path/to/img> --transition-type simple

Does it produce the same problem?

So I tried it a few times;

swww img /home/$USER/Pictures/Wallpaper/train_tokyo.gif --transition-type simple
swww img /home/$USER/Pictures/Wallpaper/edger-lucy.jpg --transition-type simple

On the swww GitHub it says; There is also simple, which simply fades into the new image

Using swww itself from the cmd line is not the same as waypaper. For me with wayaper there is no animation/fade, the changing of the wallpaper is as fast as you can blink/snap your fingers, it's fast, and it's not the same.

If I open waypaper, and only change it to simple, this is how the UI looks, with everything else on default settings.

For me too," simple" just changing wallpaper in blink (the same as "none"), while "fade" means more gradual change. I see that there's some strange buisness with that "simple" transition, they even mention in their man page that simple can have artifacts and "fade" is the same but better. So, I'd say maybe just use "fade".

I was leaving the setting before on Random...

Do you think in time you'll be able to adjust Simple to not have this happen?

I found out this happens because the simple mode needs to have the --transition-step be lower than 64. In the swww wiki, they have default set as 90 for most of the modes, but simple being 2. In waypaper, the default is set as 90 for all of them, and this seems to cause the artifacts. As to why that is the case for swww i don't know.

top image is from waypaper and bottom is through the terminal. no surprise they're the same.

Edit: both my wallpapers are static

@0pLuS0 as a quick fix when leaving on random just set the steps to be between 1 and 63

Great investigation :) Perhaps I'll just set the default at 63 for all transitions.
