Do you (or does anyone else) object to the APKG file for the "standard English" deck (i.e. the v5.3 (current) AnkiWeb file) being attached to the release?

(Until v3.3 (?) we used to have the APKG file attached to the release. I think it's very mildly useful for archival purposes (though, yes, technically everything is already in the CrowdAnki files and in git) and for convenience (easy download directly from the release).

My stance is "very weakly in favour" as OPTIONAL (i.e. if somebody remembers to attach the APKG to the release, after AnkiWeb is updated, then good, otherwise no problem). If you (even weakly) object because it might be be, say, confusing, then I'm dropping this idea. :)

(I was recently testing CrowdAnki's and Anki's import behaviours, which is how this came up...))

We had removed it to encourage new users to import the deck with CrowdAnki the first time. The goal is to make the first upgrade after that simpler.

I think I've kept them all, so maybe a compromise would be to put back the ones from previous releases. As in, whenever there's a new release, I edit the previous release and attach its APKG to it. This way, we still encourage installing the latest release from CrowdAnki, but we make installing past releases in a new Anki profile for testing purposes much easier.

I could also attach the APKG to the latest release but prefix it with something like DO NOT USE. Then when the next release comes around, I rename the previous release's attachment. 🤷

The reason makes sense!

I don't think it's worth the effort of uploading old APKGs and/or remembering to upload the APKG to the previous release, each time. (It feels like considerably more effort than just uploading the latest APKG, when even that had marginal benefit.)

(DO NOT USE is an interesting idea, but I think it'd just cause confusion.)

I'm running into a problem upgrading from v5.2 via CrowdAnki. I have Ultimate Geography v5.2 installed, as verified by the deck's description. I haven't modified the deck at all, and I have installed it via CrowdAnki.

The República Argentina shared deck has a note type Arg-geo.

When I try to import the extracted English version of v5.3 via Crowd Anki, I get a dialog prompting me to choose how to change note type. This dialogue has its Current note type marked as Arg-geo *old, which appears to be related to the República Argentina shared deck's note type.

After finishing the import, I confirm that

1. the note type Arg-geo has been removed,
2. those Argentinian provinces cards have been mapped to a note type Ultimate Geography,
3. my Ultimate Geography v5.2 cards have been transferred to a note type called Ultimate Geography-9228e,
4. some Ultimate Geography cards AND their progress have been modified. E.g., Sicily has its Capital removed, and the Country - Capital card has been reset to new.

I then rollback the update.

Hi, I can't find Seychelles in the interactive map. Like the islands are not there, it's just ocean. After clicking on another country then it does show them as a picture.

Yeah, this is an unfortunate, known limitation — the resolution of the map is not sufficient to display small islands, and in some cases where a country just consists of small islands it simply won't be able to be shown. (Having a much larger resolution would be problematic both for storage size and performance reasons. There are clever ways around this, but non-trivial and not yet implemented.)

In the interim, we could just not display the interactive map for countries that can't be clicked on, but that would be a type of hint (you'd know that such a country would have to be a small island nation or similar).
