how to use a rule within a custom rule

I'm trying to create a existsOnEither rule, which is basically an OR on the exists rule (I couldn't find any way to do OR with validation rules). Basically instead of receiving a single DbRowCheckOptions, it receives an array of them, to be able to specify that a value has to exist on either one table and column or a different one. I'm using this specifically to validate that a login user field request value exists on username or email in the user table.

So, reasonably, I don't want to recode the exists rule, but piggyback on it to run it multiple times as an OR.

But I can't find a way to run the rule manually against a specific value and then see the result...

Is that somewhat clear at least?
