Best way to render month as a string (e.g. 'Jan') in the date field?

I'm trying to use react-aria's date picker fields.
But I would like to render the date as a string, e.g. "Jan", "Feb", "Mar"

The best I've come up with so far is something like this:

            <DateInput className='flex flex-1 py-2'>
              {(segment) => {
                const text =
                  segment.type === 'month'
                    ? toMonth(segment.value ?? -1)
                    : segment.text;
                return (
                    <DateSegment
                      segment={{ ...segment, text }}
                    />
                );
              }}

I know I could rebuild it completely from scratch using the hooks, but is there a better approach?
