removing sidebar from specific pages

Hi, I'm trying to remove the sidebar from pages other than the index. I assumed that this could be configured in the _config.yml file by setting avatar_profile to false in the defaults section, but this does nothing.

The sidebar isn't controlled by _config.yml you need to set author_profile in the Markdown header to false on the pages in _pages to toggle it off.
