Previously, if a Chime had 10 questions, and students answered 7, grades would be calculated in a straightforward way: 7/10.
Because most faculty have questions that are unused, a few years ago we changed to base grades on ACTIVE questions (questions with some response). For example, If a Chime has 10 questions and only 8 are used, grades would be 7/8, not 7/10.
Though, I personally wouldn't use it, I get the argument:
it makes it easier to tell at a glance how many classes have been missed, and
there's an argument that earning points (seeing 1/10, 2/10, 3/10...) motivates participation more than losing points (1/1, 2/2, 2/3).
Should we add an setting for faculty to choose between these grading options?
Pros:
I don't think it'd be too difficult. We already had the logic from the previous default.
Gives faculty agency: they can set it in ChimeIn without requiring our intervention.
Saves faculty time: they forget that they need to ask. (They also post announcements to tell students that a fix is on the way, so they presumably are spending time dealing with student questions until they can get help).
Would persist across semesters.
Cons:
VERY few faculty request this.
The workaround works and is super fast. Probably less time on our side than creating a new setting.
Adds more complexity to grading logic.
Could be confusing to users who stumble upon this setting.

Still, some faculty prefer the old way.
