How to set background color of ListItem without ruining highlighting

Running into an issue where I want to set the background of my ListItems so that they don't pop out from my overall TUI. When I set background using:

The highlighting no longer works:

List items can't be focused so setting the :focus attribute doesn't do anything. Would appreciate some advice on this thanks!
