What does the middleware type options change?

In the docs for middleware it shows createMiddleware function requires the type property set in the options, I can't find anywhere in the docs that mention why, or what this does?

I tried reading the source and can see it can either be 'function' | 'request' but is there anything describing what this changes and when you would use one over the other?
