Gamepad materials list

Is there a way to bring up the materials list with a controller? If not I think a good way would be to give the armor stand a piece of paper.

I'm not a controller player myself, and I have no idea if it would be possible. Are there any buttons on controllers that are unused by Minecraft which could be used for a material list overlay? Or would it be better as a separate screen you access from the pause menu? Please let me know.
