You select a snapshot that you think will work (you may have to try out a few snapshots here) in the Grub boot menu, which is displayed for a few seconds shortly after starting your machine. When selecting the snapshot, you should also pay attention to which kernel you select so that the system does not get stuck in a kernel panic again.

Once in Debian, open a console or terminal (basically means the same thing, just sometimes called differently) and enter the following command (to quote from the documentation): "sudo snapper-rollback X where X is the number of the snapshot to rollback to". So if you see in the overview that there are, for example, ten snapshots and you have successfully booted from snapshot 8, this could be the snapshot that you should restore.

The lower the number, the further back the snapshot is. Your personal data will not be touched. It is about installed packages (such as the kernel) that are brought to a different state.

Then reboot and hopefully your system will be in a state that you can use again.

So I found the courage and get going with the commandline. However I got this error back. Did I do something wrong? I tried with all numbers 1-4 same result.

IF your system uses Ext4 or an LVM for the root filesystem it might be having issues. Snapper wants to use the Butter FS but some configurations are probkematic for me so I always use Ext4 and avoid Snapper - however there is potentailly help from -

Sometimes the snapper-rollback tool produces rather weird messages, I think that it might have actually worked. Did you attempt to reboot into the main root system and check?

no, sadly it did not work. What now, is a re-install the best answer, and how to do the pin if I re-install?

Sorry for butting in again but I am not reading YOUR issue and the oringinal poster's issue as being the same issue. In HIS case, the AMD/HP lappy prolly had a power/battery caching issue in which holding down power button for 25 seconds until 2 or more repeated boots clears the error and the lappy boots normally. YOUR issue I read as ButterFS/Snaps mismatch which is either you installed with Ext4FS or it truly is a kernal/ButterFS related kernel versioning issue.

So, at this stage, I feel that a complete reformated, proper partitioning with the ButterFS and reinstall would likely give you the ability to get snapper working again.

But hey, I have a disabikitty and am likely insane ><
