Default mode when starting new task #5514

Hi @geolectric! I'm Dosu and I’m helping the Roo-Code team. Roo Code doesn't currently offer a setting to change the default mode for new tasks—the default is always Code Mode, and the mode persists between sessions unless you manually switch it. There isn't a UI or config option to set Architect Mode (or any other mode) as the default for new tasks. You'll need to manually switch modes each time, either using the dropdown, slash command (e.g., If you use Architect Mode frequently, you could create a custom mode with your preferred settings, but this won't make it the default for new tasks—it just adds it to your available modes (custom modes). The "When to Use" field in custom modes helps Roo decide which mode to use for automated orchestration, but it doesn't affect the manual mode selector UI (update notes). For now, the best workaround is to double-check the mode before starting a new task to avoid accidental prompts in the wrong mode. If setting a default mode is important for your workflow, you might want to keep an eye on future updates or provide feedback to the Roo Code team. To reply, just mention @dosu. How did I do? I use Architect mode quite a bit and eventually it changes to Code mode and completes the task. Then I click start new task, and it stays on Code mode which has multiple times made me accidentally prompt to the wrong mode. Is it possible to set a default mode for new tasks?
