There is a PR for that already - #2929.

Please go pull the PR with gh pr checkout 2929 build it with npm run dev and F5 in vsCode.

Test it out, kick the tires and comment on the PR.

Yep, aware of this PR, thanks for mentioning it again. Was actually thinking of something different, a mode where Roo doesn't use tools, instead, it only uses bash, and is free to handle file reading and writing the way it wants to and not be jailed in opinionated tool use. Probably writing files would go too far, but I've noticed it's really good echoing 200 lines at once. Would love to hear your opinion on this.

I think you could try to create your own custom mode for this. Only give it command permissions (i.e. no read or edit permissions) and tell it in the custom instructions to use command-line tools for reading and writing. Curious to hear how it goes for you.

Would love to, but I believe you guys would do a much better job at prompting it and handling the context. I see that currently there's only one experimental feature, this one would be a crazy cool addition for sure. I've tested it with a remote server, and it's really fast at gathering the context it needs, listing ports, checking logs etc. It feels like with tools, it's locked within the current project folder, and it's afraid to dig deeper (e.g explore node_modules to look at the package types?). I don't see why it would be limited, most recent models have 1M tokens context window anyways.
