[Help Wanted] Workspace Viewer not starting

Hi there! I have a problem that I'm unsure whether it is a bug. I am unable to start the R Workspace Viewer. It is not appearing in my sidebar, and when I try to view it via the command pallette I get this error dialog:

'R Workspace Viewer: View' resulted in an error (Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'label'))

This occurs using both radian and the regular R terminal, and also both within and outside an renv project. My current R-specific settings are:

Does the workspace viewer show up if you open a workspace folder and do not create a terminal?

No, I get the same error if I quit and restart and try to get the Viewer without any terminal.

Looks like undefined is supplied to label in the workspace viewer somewhere. @ElianHugh any idea?

I think the label issue might be a misdirect -- View won't have a label to work off if there's no viewer in the first place. Might be something we have to check for anyway.

Wrt no viewer showing up, it could be an issue with the session watcher. The workspace viewer checks if the session watcher is enabled & won't show if it isn't. Could be worth changing that behaviour to populate the viewer with 1 node that says something about enabling the session watcher.

@noamross do you have the session watcher enabled? if so, do session watcher functionalities still work? e.g. trying to View(mtcars) in the terminal

View(mtcars) works fine - I get the table display. But I still get the same error.

The error will occur because the view command needs to have a workspace viewer to work off, so it's a byproduct of the issue you're having. We recently pushed a change to always show the workspace viewer -- would you like to try installing the artifact?

I installed the artifact and was able to open the workspace viewer. Interestingly, after that I removed and re-installed the current published version, and it worked! I didn't record everything that happened along the way, but at one point I was prompted to select a workspace, which suggests to me that I was in some state where the extension did not know what workspace it should load.

Maybe you are in a multi-root workspace somehow?
