Pause server when no players

Does the server pause when there are no players connected? I dom't want bosses to spawn or crimson to spread when none of us are online.

There is a flag controlling this. However, even when the server is not paused, bosses (or say all mobs) won't spawn without players. Crimson does spread if not paused tho

TShock inherited it from vanilla and in fact this (pause) is the default behaviour. See also: #2934

Thanks I didn't know TShock inherits everything from vanilla. It should be documented somewhere

The config is a bit messy because we have vanilla config.json, vanilla serverconfig.txt, vanilla command line args, TShock config.json, TShock command line args, environment variables, etc...

from what I see from the -forceupdate option it disables this option meaning pause when no players is on by default?

If you don't specify anything (default), it will be paused. If you enabled this flag, it will force update, but some are still being paused (e.g. no trees grown)

Short answer: No it doesn't, it is a config option in vanilla Terraria. No NPC's will spawn but evil biomes will spread. I hope this helps
