Dark mode planned?

Has anyone ever built a dark mode with chameleon or are there any plans to implement this?

Minerva and Vector skin have this feature and accoring to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Dark_mode a generic solution has downsides.

You can load an existing Bootstrap theme from somewhere like Bootswatch and tweak it somewhat.

If you just want a dark skin then Bootswatch is fine. However, if you want a dark mode toggle, like Vector 2022, then you'll still run into the downsides of a generic solution.

To get a dark mode toggle in Chameleon we will need to:

• Upgrade to Bootstrap 5.3 #385
• Support only MediaWiki 1.43 or later
• Align Bootstrap 5's dark mode design tokens with MediaWiki's

Bootstrap 5 has a built-in dark mode, and MW 1.43's style changes make it easier to implement a custom dark mode. Those two things would be the minimum requirements.

Dark Mode would be absolutely great!

Tested it: in MediaWiki 1.43 the DarkMode extension works with chameleon skin out of the box. (Did not test extensively, but it works)

We are already using that extension for years, but it cannot save the setting for users not logged in (via cookie or similar) and produces pretty odd results when the layout is more advanced - so we're not happy with that at all.
