Description

Hacker Bar is a Mac app that makes it easy to browse YCombinator Hacker News! The app lives in your menu bar for quick and easy access at any time.

Features:

  • Refreshes the front page stores of Hacker News in the background at an interval you specify (default: 5 minutes).
  • Items you open in your browser get a checkmark, indicating you've already visited that link, making it easy to quickly see what stories you've already read.
  • If your web browser is the active application, you can batch-click multiple stories and have them all open in a new tab without closing the menu.
  • Click the comment count bubble for a quick link to the comments page to upvote and interact with other Hacker News users.
  • Choose to auto-start Hacker Bar on login so that you never miss a new article.

The Hacker Bar app and Mohawk Apps, LLC are not affiliated with YCombinator or Hacker News in any way.

Review Notes

The app will ask to start on login when it opens for the first time. The user can decline this. The app shows all the articles on the front page of the YCombinator website (https://news.ycombinator.com/) and refreshes by default every 5 minutes. Each menu item shows the upvote count, the title, and the comment count (as well as whether or not the item is an ad on their front page). You can click the comment count to be taken to the comments page in your default browser, and clicking anywhere else will take you to the article link. The system then puts a little checkbox next to the article indicating that you've opened the page.
