Why is Firebase used for the backend?

I am curious what makes Firebase the choice of backend service for this project.
This is not meant to be technology bashing.

Heey,

That was a decision from over 5 years ago, at the time was a great choice!
But over the years better options appeared while firebase stagnated...

The good news is that we are almost fully migrated to supabase!

After merging #4338 we are no longer using firebase :)
