Stereo out of sync

Lately I have had a strange problem with MPD: Left and Right stereo channels are out of sync sometimes, resulting in a reverb like effect. I believe this happens (but not always) when a new song starts and it can be fixed by stopping and restarting the song.
It is quit possible MPD is not to blame, but I have no idea where to look. Any ideas?

MPD 0.24.3-1 on Debian Trixie.
