Problems with large files and curl?

A year ago there was an issue with libcurl 8.5 causing playback to stop with larger files ( curl/curl#12632). The issue was fixes in libcurl 8.6.
It seems the issue is back with libcurl 8.8 (libcurl 8.6 and 8.7 work fine) journalctl shows
mpd[34072]: exception: CURL failed: A value or data field grew larger than allowed

Is this just me or is this a problem with curl (again)?

I have CURL 8.13 and havn't seen this problem. 8.8 is quite old already.

I'm using manjaro - manjaro is on 8.12. I tried to test the versions from 8.12 down to 8.6.
I just "downgraded" to 8.13 - that one seems fine. Or maybe it's something completly different ...
