EOS token detection

When using the /completion endpoint, the EOS token (</s>) gets embedded right into the content response.

How can an API detect that </s> is the EOS token so it can strip it before showing it to the user? Different models use different tokens, and there seems nothing in the API response that maps </s> to the EOS token.
